Small Living Room Layout: The Clearances That Make It Work

A small living room is not a small version of a big one. It needs fewer things with more space between them: one clear walkway of 90 cm will make a 16 m² room feel bigger than three 50 cm gaps ever will.

Clearances: the only three numbers that matter

Gap Minimum Comfortable
Main walkway (door to window) 60 cm 90 cm
Sofa front to coffee table 40 cm 45–50 cm
Coffee table to TV unit 60 cm 90 cm
Between sofa and side wall 10 cm (arm clearance) 50 cm with a side table
TV unit to the seating see viewing distance below —

Draw the main walkway first, as a 60 cm wide strip from the door to the window, then place furniture around it. Every layout that feels wrong in a small room has furniture sitting in that strip.

Three layouts for rooms under 20 m²

1. The wall run (rooms 3.5 m wide or less)

Sofa against the long wall, TV unit opposite, coffee table between them, one armchair angled in the corner. Keep 90 cm clear between the coffee table and the TV unit so the route to the window survives. Works down to about 12 m².

2. The L (rooms 3.5–4.5 m wide)

A corner sofa or a sofa plus chaise along two walls, with a round coffee table in the open corner. Round tables have no sharp corner to walk into and allow a 40 cm gap on every side, which buys back 10–15 cm compared with a rectangular table of the same area.

3. The conversation square (no TV, or TV on a side wall)

Two sofas or a sofa and two chairs facing each other across a 90 × 60 cm table, with the TV on the short wall. This is the layout that makes small rooms feel intentional rather than provisional, and it is the only one that seats four people without a corner sofa.

TV distance: what a small room can actually take

Screen Comfortable viewing distance Fits a room of
43 inch 1.6–2.0 m 2.6 m+ depth
50 inch 1.9–2.4 m 3.0 m+ depth
55 inch 2.1–2.6 m 3.3 m+ depth
65 inch 2.5–3.1 m 3.8 m+ depth

If the room is 2.8 m deep, a 55-inch screen will feel overwhelming and you will end up sitting off-axis. Choose the screen for the distance you actually sit at, not for the biggest panel that fits the wall. The TV stand size guide covers stand widths for each screen size.

Rugs: the fastest way to make a small room look bigger

  • Front legs on the rug — the rug should reach under at least the front 15–20 cm of the sofa. A rug floating in the middle makes the floor look smaller.
  • Size: in a small room, a 160 × 230 cm rug under a 200 cm sofa, or 200 × 290 cm if the sofa is 230 cm+. Leave 20–30 cm of bare floor visible on the open sides.
  • Round rug under a round table: diameter at least the table diameter plus 60 cm.

Storage that does not eat floor

Vertical storage is the only kind a small room can afford. A 30–35 cm deep wall shelf above the TV unit or behind the sofa adds usable storage without taking walkway. A coffee table with a lower shelf or a lift-top adds 30–40 litres of hidden storage in space you already occupy. Anything on legs — sofa, TV unit, side table — is easier to keep clean and reads lighter than a solid block.

Two mirrors, placed opposite the window and on a side wall, roughly double perceived light without touching the floor area. Hang them by the rules in how high to hang a mirror.

What to remove first

In order of most space recovered per item removed: the second sofa, the armchair nobody sits in, the 120 cm coffee table (drop to 90 cm), open shelving that needs clear floor to look tidy, and any furniture taller than 110 cm standing in front of a window. A small room with four well-spaced pieces feels larger than the same room with seven pieces touching each other.
