Rug Size for a Living Room: What Fits Under a Sofa

A 200 × 290 cm rug is the standard for a three-seat sofa when the front legs sit on it by 20-30 cm. The rule behind it: the rug should reach at least 20 cm under the sofa and extend 60-80 cm beyond its front edge, so a person sitting with feet down lands on the rug, not the floor. For a 160 cm two-seater, 160 × 230 cm does the same job.

Sizes by sofa

Sofa Rug Layout
130-160 cm (2 seat) 160 × 230 cm Front legs on, 40 cm each side
190-210 cm (3 seat) 200 × 290 cm Front legs on, 45-50 cm each side
230-260 cm (3-4 seat) 240 × 340 cm Front legs on, 60 cm each side
L-shape 260 × 200 240 × 340 cm or 200 × 290 Whole seating on, or front legs only
Room under 10 m² 160 × 230 cm All furniture front legs on, 20 cm floor edge

Two layouts work: all front legs on (the rug anchors the seating group) or all four legs on (only in rooms over 20 m²). The one that never works is a rug that ends in the middle of the sofa — it makes the room look smaller, which is the opposite of what most people buy a rug for.

Floor border and door clearance

Leave 20-45 cm of bare floor around the rug. Under 20 cm the rug looks like carpet; over 45 cm it looks like a postage stamp. In a 300 cm wide room with a 200 cm rug, you get 50 cm each side — acceptable if one side is a wall.

Check the door swing: a rug 15 mm thick under an inward-opening door is fine, 20 mm+ can catch. Measure the gap under the door, not the rug pile.

Dining rugs are a different sum

A living room rug stops at the sofa; a dining rug has to take the pulled-out chair. That means 60-70 cm beyond each table edge, so a 140 × 80 cm four-person table needs 270-280 × 210-220 cm. The dining rug guide has the table-by-table numbers.

Material and pile in a living room

  • Pile height: 6-10 mm for living rooms — enough to feel soft, low enough for a vacuum and for chair castors.
  • Underlay: add 5-8 mm felt; it doubles the life of the rug and stops the creep on wood floors.
  • Material: polypropylene for households with pets, wool for longevity (10-15 years against 5-7).
  • Colour: a rug 2 shades lighter or darker than the floor, not the same, or the room loses its edges.

If the sofa is still being chosen, size it first with the sofa size guide — the rug follows the sofa, not the other way round. For narrow rooms, the small living room guide covers the walkway maths.
