The TV stand width rule is simple: the stand should extend at least 15 cm past the screen on each side. Everything else follows from that.

Width by screen size
| TV size | Approx. screen width | Minimum stand width | Better |
|---|---|---|---|
| 43″ | 96 cm | 126 cm | 140 cm |
| 50″ | 111 cm | 141 cm | 160 cm |
| 55″ | 123 cm | 153 cm | 170–180 cm |
| 65″ | 145 cm | 175 cm | 200 cm |
| 75″ | 167 cm | 197 cm | 220 cm+ |
The minimum is what looks balanced and catches a knock; the “better” width is what looks deliberate and gives the soundbar and console room to breathe.
Depth: the number nobody needs to worry about
TV stands sit between 35 and 45 cm deep, and every TV sold this decade fits. Depth is worth checking only for one reason: does the stand fit the wall it is going against? A 40 cm deep unit under a wall-mounted TV is fine; the same unit in a narrow living room passage is not. Apply the same walkway rule as everywhere else — keep 80 cm of clear floor.
Height and viewing distance
- Stand height: 40–50 cm puts the screen centre near seated eye level (about 105–110 cm from the floor) once the TV's own stand height is added.
- Viewing distance: roughly 2–2.5 m for 55″, 2.5–3 m for 65″. If your sofa sits closer than that, the TV is too big for the room no matter which stand you buy.
Weight and cable reality
Check the maximum load, not the TV's weight only — a soundbar, console and decoder share the same top panel. And measure the distance from the TV position to the socket before choosing between an open-shelf and a closed unit; closed cabinets need a cable hole at the right height.
Viewing distance and screen height
| Screen size | Comfortable viewing distance | Typical stand width |
|---|---|---|
| 43–50 inch | 1.7–2.2 m | 100–120 cm |
| 55–60 inch | 2.2–2.6 m | 120–140 cm |
| 65–70 inch | 2.6–3.0 m | 150–180 cm |
| 75 inch and up | 3.0 m+ | 180 cm+ or wall-mounted |
Screen centre should sit at eye level when seated — roughly 100–110 cm from the floor for an average sofa. A stand 50 cm high with a 55 inch screen lands almost exactly there, which is why that pairing is so common.
The details that decide whether it looks finished
- Stand wider than the screen reads as furniture; narrower reads as a shelf with a TV balanced on it. Both work — pick deliberately rather than by accident.
- Leave 5–10 cm behind the stand for cables and ventilation. Fully flush units overheat and are impossible to plug into once loaded.
- Cable route: plan one channel — a grommet, a conduit or a wall-hung unit with a gap underneath. Visible cables undo the tidiness of any stand.
- Weight: check the stand's load rating against the TV plus soundbar plus anything stored on top. A 65 inch set with stand is often 25–30 kg.
