Sofa to TV Distance: The 2.5 m Rule

Sofa to TV Distance: The 2.5 m Rule

Short answer: put your eyes 2.4–2.9 m from a 65-inch screen, 2.0–2.5 m from a 55-inch, and 2.9–3.4 m from a 75-inch. That is the range where the picture fills roughly 30–40° of your field of view — the band THX and SMPTE both land in. Closer and you start seeing pixels and camera grain; further and you may as well have bought a smaller TV.

This is the single most common living-room mistake, and it is not the buyer's fault. Showrooms are 8 m deep, so every TV looks modest. Then it arrives, gets mounted above the fireplace, and the sofa is 4.5 m back — which is 75-inch territory for a 55-inch screen.

The distance table, by screen size

Screen (diagonal) Width THX comfortable 4K can move closer Screen centre height
43 inch 95 cm 1.6–1.9 m 1.2 m 100 cm
55 inch 122 cm 2.0–2.5 m 1.6 m 105 cm
65 inch 144 cm 2.4–2.9 m 1.9 m 110 cm
75 inch 166 cm 2.9–3.4 m 2.3 m 110 cm
85 inch 188 cm 3.3–3.8 m 2.6 m 110 cm

THX's rule of thumb is simple: divide the diagonal in inches by 0.84 for the maximum distance in metres, and by 1.2 for the minimum. A 65-inch set gives 2.4 m to 3.2 m. SMPTE is slightly tighter, recommending a 30° viewing angle, which works out at about 1.6× the screen height.

Why 4K changes the arithmetic

Resolution is what limits how close you can sit before the picture falls apart. On a 1080p panel, pixels become visible at roughly 1.6× the screen height. On 4K, that drops to about 1.0×, so you can move 30–40% closer without seeing the grid. If your sofa is fixed at 2.2 m from the wall, 4K means a 65-inch now works where a 55-inch used to be the ceiling.

What 4K does not fix is comfort. A 40 °+ viewing angle is immersive for films and tiring for a two-hour news channel. Most households settle around 32°.

Screen height: the number that ruins necks

Centre of the screen at 100–110 cm from the floor when seated — roughly eye level. Not above a fireplace, unless you enjoy the front row of a cinema for the rest of your life. The top third of the screen should sit at or below eye level from your normal sitting position.

  • Sofa seat height 42 cm + eye height 65 cm = eyes at about 107 cm. That is where the screen centre goes.
  • Above a fireplace? Add a tilt mount of 10–15° and accept that you will recline. Or move the TV and put art up there.
  • Bedroom? Screen centre 90–100 cm, because you watch lying down and your eyeline drops.

Fitting the furniture around that number

Once you know the distance, the room plans itself. A 2.5 m viewing distance plus a 90 cm sofa depth plus 80 cm of walkway behind needs a room about 4.2 m deep. If yours is 3.6 m, drop a screen size instead of shaving the walkway — 75 cm is the minimum comfortable circulation gap for one person, and 90 cm for two.

Also leave 8–10 cm behind the TV stand for cables and ventilation, and check that the stand is at least 20 cm wider than the screen so the proportions do not look top-heavy. A 144 cm TV on a 106 cm cabinet is the visual equivalent of a big head on a small body.
