A sofa bed is judged twice: as a sofa every day and as a bed on the nights it opens. Most buyers optimise for the first and discover the second on the first guest's first morning. The two numbers that decide the outcome are mattress thickness and floor clearance in front of the sofa.

Mechanisms compared
| Type | How it opens | Bed size typical | Clearance needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Click-clack / folding | Seat folds flat backwards | 115 × 190 cm (two-seat), 140 × 190 (three-seat) | No extra floor — but backrest needs 15–20 cm wall gap |
| Pull-out (under-seat) | Seat slides forward, second panel lifts | 140 × 190 cm, 160 × 200 cm | 60–80 cm in front |
| Trundle / pop-up | Second mattress rises or pulls out from under | 2 × 90 × 190 cm, or 140 × 190 stacked | 50–70 cm in front |
| Chair bed | Armchair unfolds flat | 70–80 × 190 cm | 40–60 cm in front |
| Corner with storage chaise | Chaise lifts, bed folds out of the seat | 140 × 190 cm | 70–90 cm in front |
Click-clack is the only type that needs no floor space to open, which makes it the right choice for a narrow room where the sofa faces a wall 2 m away. Everything that pulls out needs a clear strip in front for the length of the bed minus the seat depth.
Mattress thickness: the 12 cm rule
Below 10 cm of foam you will feel the frame bars by the third night; 12–15 cm is the practical minimum for regular sleeping, and 15–18 cm is where a sofa bed stops feeling like a compromise. Anything under 8 cm is a guest bed for one or two nights, at most.
- Foam density matters more than thickness: 30–35 kg/m³ holds up, 25 kg/m³ collapses in a year of nightly use.
- Springs in a sofa bed should be pocket springs in their own pockets, not open coil — open coil transfers every movement.
- Three-fold mattresses crease at the fold lines; expect a slight dip at the hip after a year of nightly use unless the foam is dense.
If the bed will be slept on every night, buy a pull-out with a proper 140 × 190 mattress rather than a folding sofa. A folding mechanism is a guest solution by design.
Barrel width and getting it in
Sofa beds are heavier than sofas: a 245 cm folding model with a steel mechanism weighs 90–110 kg, and a pull-out with a spring mattress can pass 130 kg. Two consequences — check the floor and check the route. Compressed sofas shipped in a box solve both: they arrive at a fraction of the volume and take shape 48–72 hours after unpacking.
As a sofa: what to check
Seat height of 40–45 cm and seat depth of 55–60 cm keep it usable as everyday seating; a bed-first design usually ends up at 65–70 cm deep, which is too deep for sitting without a cushion behind you. Look for a mechanism that locks in the sofa position — a click-clack that will not lock will drift open when someone sits down hard.
Fabric: chenille and bouclé hide the crease marks that folding beds create at the seat edge; smooth leather shows every fold. Removable, washable covers matter more on a sofa bed than on a sofa, because it doubles as a bed for guests who arrive with luggage and coffee.
Placement: the 20 cm wall gap
Every sofa bed needs 15–20 cm between the back and the wall so the backrest can tilt without scraping paint, and so the mechanism has room. Pull-out models additionally need the clearance in front listed above — measure from the sofa front to the nearest fixed object, not to the coffee table you can move.
If the room cannot give that clearance, the honest answer is a chair bed or a click-clack in a different position rather than a pull-out that opens into the doorway.
