Upholstery is sold on how it looks in a photograph. It is kept or replaced on how it behaves with a cat, a four-year-old and a glass of juice. Those are three different tests: snag (claws and buckles), cleanability (spills), and abrasion (rub count).

Rub counts, and what they mean
| Martindale rubs | Grade | Realistic life in a family room |
|---|---|---|
| 15,000–20,000 | Light domestic | 3–5 years, adults only |
| 25,000–30,000 | General domestic | 5–8 years |
| 30,000–40,000 | Heavy domestic | 8–12 years, pets and children |
| 40,000+ | Contract | Hotel lobbies; usually too stiff for a home sofa |
A rub count is abrasion only. It says nothing about whether a claw will pull a loop, so read it together with the weave structure.
Fabric by fabric
| Fabric | Snag | Pet hair | Cleaning | Verdict with pets + kids |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tight-weave chenille | Low | Holds it, but vacuums out | Code W, water-based | Best all-rounder |
| Bouclé | Very high — loops pull | Traps it in the loops | Code S, solvent only | Avoid with cats |
| Velvet / velour | Low | Shows every hair | Code S, dry clean | Survives claws, punishes mess |
| Linen and linen blends | Medium — fibres break | Low | Code W, shrinks | Beautiful for two years |
| Microfibre / performance weave | Low | Wipes off | Code W, bleach-cleanable types exist | Best with toddlers |
| Leather and PU | Punctures, does not tear | Wipes off | Damp cloth | Good, but cold in winter and punctured by claws |
| Corduroy | Low | Holds it | Code S | Shows sitting marks within a year |
The three tests that predict failure
- The thumbnail test. Press a thumbnail into the weave and drag 2 cm. If fibres lift, a claw will catch. Do this on a sample, in the shop or on a swatch ordered home.
- The water test. Drip water on the sample. If it beads, the fabric has a stain guard that will wear off in 2–4 years of cleaning. If it soaks straight in, any spill goes into the foam.
- The hair test. Rub a wool glove across the sample. Looped and brushed surfaces grip; flat weaves release.
What actually protects a sofa
- Removable, washable covers beat every fabric choice. A 30 °C machine wash on a zip-off cover is the only real reset button.
- Loose back cushions can be rotated and, when they fail, replaced. Fixed backs cannot.
- Reversible seat cushions double the life of the part that takes the load.
- A tight weave at 30,000 rubs in a mid-tone — not cream, not black — hides both hair and marks.
- Foam density of 30 kg/m³ or more. A sofa with good fabric on 25 kg/m³ foam will show a dip in 18 months regardless.
Seat depth and height interact with this: a deep sofa means feet on the fabric rather than the floor, which is where most wear happens. The sofa size guide covers depth; the sofa bed guide covers the mechanisms that fail first in a dual-purpose sofa.
