Short answer: for a guest room, size the sofa bed by its open footprint, not its closed one — expect 190–208 cm long by 110–160 cm wide once deployed, plus 75–90 cm of walkway around it. If the bed will be opened more than a couple of nights a week, choose a clic-clac with a 160 cm seat width and at least 10 cm of padding; occasional-use rooms can live happily with a 130 cm model.

The classic guest-room mistake is buying a sofa bed that fits folded and then discovering it needs a 2.4 m clearance dance to actually open. Measure the open size plus the swing of your own elbows. Ask us how we know.
The sizes that actually matter
| Model width (closed) | Sleep surface | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 130 cm clic-clac | approx. 190 × 100 cm | One adult, short stays |
| 160 cm clic-clac | approx. 190 × 115 cm | One adult, regular stays |
| 193 cm clic-clac | approx. 190 × 120 cm | Cosy couple, weekly use |
| 208 cm 4-in-1 | approx. 208 × 120 cm | Couple, longest surface |
Rule of thumb: the sleep surface should be at least 20 cm longer than the tallest guest and 100 cm wide minimum — anything narrower and your uncle will spend the night negotiating the edge like a cliff.
Clic-clac vs pull-out vs storage
- Clic-clac: seat folds flat in one motion, no mattress to drag out. Best for daily conversion — the whole operation takes under 15 seconds.
- Pull-out: real mattress hidden under the seat, but you need 100+ cm of clear floor in front and the mechanical bits wear faster with daily use.
- Storage chaise: the lift-up section swallows duvets and pillows — in a guest room that doubles as a gym/office/anything, this is 80–150 litres of free storage.
Padding: the 10 cm line
Under 10 cm of padding over a hard folding base, adults start filing complaints by night two. Our clic-clacs use 10–12 cm foam over slatted support, with adjustable backrests that double as a reading position — because guests who can't sit up in bed end up sitting on your kitchen counter.
Daily use checklist
- Mechanism rated for repeated folding — hinge play should be under 2 mm new.
- Removable covers: guest rooms collect spills at roughly triple the household average.
- Open clearance: keep 75 cm on the opening side minimum, 90 cm if it's your main walkway.
- Air the mattress surface monthly — folding foam traps heat and moisture.
The 30-second decision
Couple staying weekly? 193 or 208 cm. One kid or one friend a few nights a month? 130 or 160 cm and pocket the difference. Either way, measure the open footprint before you click buy — your future host self will send thanks.
What about the sofa-bed's second life?
Between guests, a sofa bed works day shifts: reading nook, afternoon napping station, or the spot where the dog pretends he isn't allowed. Two specs make that double life workable — an adjustable backrest (so you can sit at 45° without deploying the full bed) and side pockets, which absorb phones, remotes and the book everyone lost. A guest-room sofa bed that's unusable by day is furniture doing half a job.
One more number: measure the closed depth too. Sofas that fold flat often run 85–100 cm deep, and in a 3 × 3 m room that leaves 200 cm of walking lane — enough, but check it before the delivery guys helpfully "figure something out".
