A reading lamp needs its shade bottom at 100-110 cm; a corner lamp wants 165-180 cm overall; a lamp behind a sofa wants its shade 20-30 cm above the sofa back. All three numbers come from one measurement: your eye level when seated, which is 110-120 cm above the floor on a 42-45 cm seat. The shade has to sit at or below that line so the bulb is screened, and the light has to land on the page, not over your shoulder.

Why 110-120 cm is the controlling number
Seat height on a normal armchair is 42-45 cm; eye level while sitting is 110-120 cm. Anything brighter than the room at or above that height, inside your field of view, is glare. Drop the shade bottom to 100-110 cm and the bulb disappears behind the shade while the pool of light still reaches a book held at 70-75 cm. That is the whole reason floor lamps for reading are 150-165 cm tall rather than 180 cm.
| Position | Total lamp height | Shade bottom | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beside a reading chair | 150-165 cm | 100-110 cm | Shade within 40-50 cm of the chair arm |
| Behind an 85 cm sofa back | 160-180 cm | 120-130 cm | Top of shade 20-30 cm above the back |
| Corner fill light | 165-180 cm | 140-150 cm | Uplight or wide shade, 40 cm from both walls |
| Arc lamp over a sofa | 190-210 cm | 200-215 cm | 60-90 cm horizontal reach from the base |
| Bedside, floor-standing | 140-155 cm | 95-110 cm | Switch reachable from the mattress top (55-60 cm) |
Behind the sofa: the 20-30 cm rule
A lamp behind a sofa is read as part of the sofa, not as a separate object, when its shade clears the back by 20-30 cm. On an 85 cm back that is a shade top at 105-115 cm, so a 160-175 cm lamp. Below 15 cm the shade looks squashed against the upholstery; above 35 cm the lamp reads as a standard and starts to compete with the wall art.
Leave 15-20 cm between the lamp column and the sofa back. Any closer and the shade sits over the seat, throwing light straight down onto the cushion instead of into the room.
Shade width, bulb, and reach
- Shade width: 30-40 cm for a reading lamp, 40-50 cm for a corner lamp. The shade should be wider than the bulb by at least 8 cm on each side or you will see the glare ring.
- Bulb: 2700-3000 K, 700-900 lumens, dimmable. A 400 lumen lamp cannot light a page at 110 cm; a 1500 lumen one turns the corner into a spotlight.
- Switch: a foot switch or a switch at 90-110 cm on the column. Anything lower means bending, and lamps with low switches get left on.
- Base: 25-30 cm diameter weighted base, or a base that slides under the sofa. A 300 g base on a 170 cm column tips at the first hoover.
Where floor lamps go wrong
The common mistake is buying for the ceiling height instead of for the seat. A 180 cm lamp beside a low armchair puts the shade above eye level, so you look up into it and the page goes dim. The second mistake is a corner lamp bright enough to read by — corner light should be 40-60% of the reading lamp's output, or the corner becomes the brightest thing in the room and pulls the eye away from the seating.
Pair the lamp with a side table within arm's reach (60-70 cm from the seat front) so a cup does not land on the floor. The small living room layout guide shows where the lamp sits in a 12 m2 plan, and the coffee table height guide has the seat-to-table heights that keep the whole arrangement in proportion.
