The rule in one line: pick a bench between two thirds and the full width of your mattress, keep its seat top at or below the mattress top, and leave 10–15 cm of air between bed and bench. For a 140 cm double bed that means 90–140 cm; for a 160 cm queen, 105–160 cm; for a 180 cm king, 120–180 cm.

Length: two thirds to full width
Below two thirds of the bed width the bench reads as a stray stool rather than a pair with the bed. At full width it looks intentional and gives two adults side-by-side seating. Our 80 cm shoe bench suits a 120 cm single or small double; the 90 × 33 × 43 cm bamboo bench lands nicely on a 140 cm bed; for queens and kings choose 100–120 cm models like an upholstered 100 × 36 × 45 cm bench.
| Mattress width | Bench length | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 90 cm single | 60–90 cm | 62–80 cm shoe bench |
| 140 cm double | 90–140 cm | 90 cm bamboo bench |
| 160 cm queen | 105–160 cm | 100–110 cm upholstered |
| 180 cm king | 120–180 cm | 120 cm+ bench |
Height: seat top at or below the mattress
A standard mattress top sits 50–60 cm from the floor (frame 25–35 cm plus mattress 20–25 cm). A bench of 43–48 cm seat height sits just below that line, which is what makes the composition look level and lets you sit without climbing. Bench tops above 50 cm next to a low bed look like furniture from two different rooms. Sitting comfort also matters: 43–47 cm keeps feet flat on the floor for most adults between 160 and 185 cm tall.
The 10–15 cm gap and the 60 cm walkway
Leave 10–15 cm between the footboard and the bench so sheets and duvets can hang without catching, and so the bed still reads as the main piece. Then check the walk behind the bench: you still need 60 cm of clear passage to the door or closet. In a 3 × 3.5 m bedroom with 60 cm already allocated elsewhere, a 33–36 cm deep bench fits where a 45 cm deep one chokes the room. Narrow 26–36 cm benches are the safe default.
Double duty: storage and landing zone
The best end-of-bed benches do three jobs: seating for dressing, a landing pad for tomorrow's outfit, and storage. Lift-top or drawer versions add 40–80 L of hidden space — enough for two folded duvet sets or off-season shoes. If the bench has a cushioned top, 45 cm height with a washable cover survives daily shoe-on, shoe-off traffic far better than bare wood in families.
Quick fit checklist
Measure bed width → choose 2/3 to 1× length. Measure mattress top height → choose a bench at or below it. Confirm 10–15 cm to the bed and 60 cm of walking space behind. Only then decide between wood, bamboo or upholstered tops based on how much sitting it will actually do.
Style pairing in three lines
Upholstered benches with cushioned tops suit beds with fabric headboards - match tone, not pattern. Wood or bamboo benches pair with metal and rattan beds, and their 43-45 cm open-slat builds keep the room visually light. Storage-lid versions trade some looks for function; choose them when the closet is genuinely full, not as a default, because a lid you lift twice a year is just a dust trap.
