Short answer: for a 160 cm queen bed, use a 200 × 300 cm rug and let it run 60 cm past the foot; for a 180 cm king, go 250 × 350 cm; for a 90 cm single, 120 × 180 cm. If the budget says no, a 160 × 230 cm rug tucked under the bottom two-thirds of the bed works too — just do not try to make a 120 × 170 cm rug look generous under a double bed. It will look like a placemat.

Rug sizing is the fastest way to make a bedroom look finished or accidentally studenty, and it is pure arithmetic. Bed width plus two side margins plus a foot margin — that is the whole formula.
The numbers, by bed size
| Bed | Mattress | Rug size | Shows each side | Shows at foot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 90 × 190 cm | 120 × 180 cm | 15 cm | 0 cm (stops at foot) |
| Double | 140 × 190 cm | 160 × 230 cm | 10 cm | 40 cm |
| Queen | 160 × 200 cm | 200 × 300 cm | 20 cm | 100 cm |
| King | 180 × 200 cm | 250 × 350 cm | 35 cm | 150 cm |
| Super king | 180 × 220 cm | 300 × 400 cm | 60 cm | 180 cm |
Three layouts that work
1. Full coverage. The rug runs under the whole bed and out on three sides: 60 cm at the sides, 60–90 cm at the foot. Best for large rooms and the most forgiving if you get the size slightly wrong. This is the layout that makes a 200 × 300 cm rug earn its price.
2. Two-thirds tuck. The rug starts about 60 cm from the headboard and runs past the foot. You get the soft landing where your feet hit the floor and none of the waste under the pillows. A 160 × 230 cm rug does this under a queen.
3. Runners on each side. Two 80 × 150 cm runners, one per side, 10 cm from the bed frame. Cheapest option, works in narrow rooms, and easy to wash. The catch: it reads as two rugs, not one, so keep them identical.
Pile height and door clearance
A 20 mm shag rug under a bedroom door that has 8 mm of clearance is a door that no longer closes. Measure the gap under the door before you buy anything above 12 mm pile. For most bedrooms, 8–12 mm is the sweet spot: enough cushion underfoot, no door drama, and a vacuum cleaner that still moves.
Material, briefly
- Wool: 15–20 years, sheds for the first three months, costs 2–3× synthetic.
- Polypropylene: 5–8 years, stain-resistant, feels plasticky under bare feet.
- Cotton flatweave: machine washable, 4–6 years, best for kids' rooms.
- Viscose: looks like silk, marks with water, avoid in bedrooms with a bathroom attached.
Do not forget the anti-slip pad
A rug that shifts 2 cm a week will be folded under the bed within a month. A felt-and-rubber pad at 5 mm adds cushioning, stops creep and roughly doubles rug life. Cut it 2 cm smaller than the rug on every side so it never shows.
