Is an Expensive Sofa Worth It? The Crossover Point

Usually it is worth it, but the crossover arrives later than most people expect — around year 7 to 9. A £600 sofa replaced every four years costs £150 a year. An £1,800 sofa that genuinely lasts twelve costs the same. Below that threshold you paid for a badge; above it, you bought years.

Cost per year, worked out

Price Realistic life Cost per year What you usually get
£400–600 3–5 years £120–160 Particleboard frame, foam-only seat, 100% polyester
£900–1,200 6–8 years £130–180 Hardwood frame, webbing or sinuous springs, removable covers
£1,800–2,500 10–15 years £130–220 Kiln-dried hardwood, pocket springs, foam 35 kg/m³+, replaceable cushions
£4,000+ 15–25 years £170–260 Hand-tied springs, frame guarantee 20+ years, recoverable

Notice what the maths actually says. Cost per year is flat across the whole range — the question is not "cheap or expensive" but "what do I get for the same annual spend." The £600 sofa is not a bargain at £150 a year, it is a subscription: you pay again in four years, at whatever prices are then.

The three things worth paying for

  • A kiln-dried hardwood frame — beech, ash, birch — with corner blocks glued and screwed. Ask for the frame guarantee; a 15-year frame guarantee is a manufacturer betting on their own timber, and that bet is worth more than any showroom smell.
  • Suspension you can name. Eight-way hand-tied springs last 20+ years, pocket springs 10–15, sinuous springs 7–10, webbing 5–7. Ask which, in writing. If the answer is "high quality springs", the answer is the cheapest one.
  • Foam at 35 kg/m³ or above in the seat, with a wrap of fibre or feather for feel. At 25–28 kg/m³ the seat softens visibly within two years, and by year four you are sitting in a hammock with a frame around it.

What you can safely skip

Trend colours and seasonal fabrics — a £150 premium for a colour that dates in 18 months. Brand-name licensing. Anything described as "designer collaboration". Recliner mechanisms on a sofa that faces a wall 2 m away. And the extended five-year accidental damage plan that costs 15% of the sofa and excludes, in the small print, the two things that actually happen: a biro mark and a spilled glass of red.

The one upgrade almost always worth it: removable, washable covers. A sofa with zip-off covers gets 3–5 more years out of the same frame for maybe 8% more money. Households with a dog or a four-year-old should treat it as mandatory.

The five-minute test in the shop

Sit for five uninterrupted minutes, not five seconds. Then: sit on the front edge (does the frame dig in?), sit on one arm (does it creak?), push the back corners apart (does the frame flex more than a few millimetres?), and lift one end 5 cm (can one person do it?). A heavy sofa is not automatically good, but a 40 kg three-seater with a claimed hardwood frame is telling you something.

Sit in the exact position you sit at home. Feet on floor, back against the cushion, no spare cushion behind you. Roughly half of sofa returns trace back to a seat depth that was 8 cm too deep for the person using it, and that is a measurement, not a matter of taste.
