Short answer: MDF furniture lasts 10–20 years indoors, and the spread has almost nothing to do with the brand. Keep relative humidity between 45% and 55%, seal every cut edge, and never let water sit on a joint, and a €300 MDF sideboard will outlive the fashion for it. Push humidity past 65% or park it in a bathroom and you can halve that number.

MDF gets called "fake wood" by people who have never looked at a cross-section. It is wood fibre glued with resin and pressed under heat — homogeneous, dense, and dimensionally far more stable than solid timber. Its weakness is not strength. It is water, and the edges.
The realistic lifespan, by product and place
| Where it lives | Humidity | Typical life | What fails first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room, bedroom | 45–55% | 15–20 years | Hinge screws loosening |
| Kitchen, away from sink | 50–65% | 10–15 years | Edge banding lifting |
| Bathroom | 70%+ | 4–7 years | Swelling at the bottom edge |
| Garage or unheated conservatory | Varies 30–90% | 3–6 years | Delamination of the face veneer |
| Under a window, direct sun | Any | 8–12 years | Colour fade, then joint creep |
The pattern is simple: MDF dies from the bottom up and the edges in. A cabinet that sits 10 mm off a damp floor lasts years longer than the same cabinet sitting flat on tiles.
Why edges matter more than the panel
A factory edge is sealed by the pressing process itself. A cut edge is 30–40% more absorbent, and it wicks water sideways into the core like a straw. That is why a €12 edge-banding iron and a roll of matching tape is the best money you will spend on MDF furniture.
- Seal cut edges with two coats of primer or PVA glue before assembly. Two minutes per edge.
- Re-glue lifting banding the week you notice it, not the year. Water gets in through a 2 mm gap.
- Use silicone along the back edge of anything in a kitchen or bathroom. It is invisible and it is the difference between 7 years and 15.
Load capacity: what MDF will and will not hold
A 18 mm MDF shelf spanning 80 cm carries about 25–30 kg before visible sag; the same shelf at 100 cm drops to 15–20 kg. That is roughly 40 paperback books per metre. If you need a shelf for vinyl or hardbacks, keep the span under 75 cm and add a centre support — MDF does not fail dramatically, it just sags, and a sagged shelf never comes back.
Screw holding is the other weak point. A 4 mm screw into an MDF face pulls out at around 40 kg; into the edge, at around 25 kg. Hinges work loose after 5–8 years of daily use, which is why cabinet doors are usually the first thing to droop. A €3 pack of MDF-specific insert nuts fixes it permanently.
The €10 maintenance that buys five years
- Run a dehumidifier or open a window when indoor RH passes 60%. A €15 hygrometer tells you more than any advice.
- Keep furniture 5–10 cm off external walls, which run colder and condense.
- Wipe spills within a minute — MDF absorbs through a 1 mm scratch in about 90 seconds.
- Put felt pads under everything that slides. Abraded edges are open edges.
- Re-tighten hinges and cam locks once a year; loose joints flex and flexing cracks the surface.
None of this makes MDF into oak. It makes it a sensible 15-year purchase instead of a 5-year one, which for most furniture is the entire ballgame.
