Children's Desk Height by Age: A cm Chart

Children's Desk Height by Age: A cm Chart

Desk height by age: 45–48 cm at 3–5 years, 52–55 cm at 6–8, 58–62 cm at 9–11, and 68–72 cm from 12 upward. The number that matters more than the desk height is the gap between the chair seat and the desktop: 24–27 cm, which is what keeps the elbows at 90° and the feet flat.

The chart

Age Height range Desk height Chair seat height Chair-to-desk gap
2–3 85–95 cm 40–42 cm 18–20 cm 21–23 cm
3–5 95–110 cm 45–48 cm 22–25 cm 23–25 cm
6–8 110–128 cm 52–55 cm 28–30 cm 24–26 cm
9–11 128–145 cm 58–62 cm 33–36 cm 25–27 cm
12–14 145–163 cm 64–68 cm 38–41 cm 25–27 cm
15+ / adult 163 cm+ 70–75 cm 42–46 cm 26–29 cm

These are working heights for writing and reading, not for a keyboard. For screen work, the desk stays the same and the screen moves: the top of the monitor at eye level, 50–70 cm away.

How to check a desk without a tape measure

Three quick tests, in order. If any fails, the desk is the wrong height for that child today:

  • Elbow test: sitting straight, elbows bent 90°, the forearms should rest on the desktop without lifting the shoulders. Shoulders up = desk too high.
  • Knee test: thighs horizontal, feet flat on the floor, knees should clear the underside by 2–3 cm. Knees touching = desk too low or the apron too deep.
  • Foot test: feet flat, no dangling. If the chair is right and the feet dangle, add a 10–15 cm footrest rather than lowering the desk.

A 56 × 52 × 48 cm children's table-and-chair set sits at the 3–8 year band on the chart: 48 cm desk height, with the chair at 24–26 cm. That is a five-year useful life, not a ten-year one, which is the honest trade-off for a fixed-height kids' set.

Fixed or adjustable

Children grow 5–7 cm a year between 3 and 6, then 4–6 cm a year to 12. A fixed desk is outgrown in roughly 2.5–3 years; a height-adjustable desk covers 45–75 cm and lasts 8–10 years.

  • Fixed desk at 48 cm: right for ages 3–8. Buy again at 8. Total cost is usually lower than one adjustable desk, but you carry two desks through the house.
  • Adjustable 45–75 cm: one purchase, but the mechanism adds 3–5 kg and 4–6 cm of frame depth. Check the desk still fits the room at its lowest setting.
  • The middle path: fixed desk plus a height-adjustable chair. Covers 4–5 years for very little money, because the chair does most of the adjustment work.

Depth, width and the things nobody measures

Desk height is only one dimension. The others:

  • Depth: 50–60 cm for a child. Under 45 cm, an A4 workbook plus a pencil case overhangs the front edge, and the child works with their elbows in the air.
  • Width: 80 cm minimum for one child with a book and a lamp; 100 cm if a parent sits alongside to help with homework.
  • Under-desk clearance: 55–60 cm of height and 45 cm of knee depth. A drawer under the desktop takes 8–10 cm of that and is the reason many "kids' desks" fail the knee test.
  • Legroom width: 60 cm between the legs. Narrower and the chair cannot be pushed in.

Light matters as much as height: a desk lamp on the opposite side to the writing hand, at 40–50 cm above the surface, with the light coming over the non-writing shoulder. For a right-handed child, lamp on the left.
