Can You Put a Dresser in a Closet?

Can You Put a Dresser in a Closet?

Short answer: yes, a dresser can live in a closet, and in small bedrooms it is often the smartest square metre in the flat. Three numbers decide whether it works: 60 cm of closet depth, 45 cm of clear floor in front of the drawer fronts, and a door that opens outward or slides.

The appeal is obvious once you think about it vertically. A closet is the only space in a bedroom that is already dedicated to clothes, already dark, and already has walls on three sides. Drop a chest of drawers inside and you have freed 80–100 cm of floor in the room itself — usually exactly the amount needed to stop walking sideways past the bed.

The depth maths

A standard dresser is 40–50 cm deep. A standard bedroom closet is 55–60 cm deep, because that is the depth a clothes hanger needs. Those two numbers are compatible, but only just, and only if you are honest about what happens when a drawer opens.

Closet depth Dresser that fits Drawer travel left Verdict
Under 50 cm Nothing with drawers 0 cm Use shelves or baskets instead
50–55 cm 35 cm deep, shallow drawers — Only with an outward-opening door
55–60 cm 40 cm deep chest Door must stay open or slide Works, drawers pulled one at a time
60–65 cm 45–50 cm deep 20 cm with door open Comfortable
Walk-in, 150 cm+ wide Any, against the short wall Full extension Proper dressing room

Drawer travel is the number everyone forgets. A 45 cm deep drawer pulls out 45 cm — if it is full extension — and that travel has to happen somewhere. In a hinged-door closet, that somewhere is your shins, followed by the door frame.

Door type decides everything

  • Hinged door opening out: the best case. The dresser can sit flush to the back wall, and you open one drawer at a time with the room to yourself.
  • Sliding doors: fine if the track sits above the dresser top. If the door panel slides in front of the drawers, you have just built a wall.
  • Bi-fold: workable but check the folded stack depth — bi-folds need 10–15 cm of clearance when folded.
  • No door at all: the easiest conversion. Take the doors off, patch the hinges, and treat the closet as a niche.

Light first, furniture second

A closet with one overhead bulb and a dresser at the back is a cave. Before installing anything, run LED strip along the top inside edge, or fit a battery-powered motion light on the side wall. Warm white at 3000K makes folded clothes look like clothes rather than grey shapes, and the motion sensor means you are not hunting for a switch with an armful of laundry.

Ventilation is not optional

Clothes in a closed box with a warm body nearby get damp. Leave 5 cm of air gap between the dresser back and the wall, keep the door open for an hour after a shower, and skip solid-backed dressers in a closet that shares a wall with a bathroom. Mould on a shirt collar is a hard problem to undo.

What to put in it

Use the closet dresser for the things you reach for daily, and keep the hanging rail above for the things you do not. A practical split:

Zone Height from floor Contents
Top surface 85–90 cm Folded laundry basket, jewellery tray
Upper drawers 60–85 cm T-shirts, knitwear (eye level when standing)
Lower drawers 20–60 cm Jeans, towels, bedding
Hanging rail 170–180 cm Shirts, dresses; double rail for trousers
Top shelf 190 cm+ Suitcases, out-of-season bedding

One caution: a dresser in front of a hanging rail blocks the bottom 90 cm of every garment. If the closet is under 120 cm wide, choose between hanging and drawers rather than trying to have both. The drawers usually win, because nobody enjoys folding a shirt on a bed covered in other shirts.
