Bar stools are bought by look and returned by height. The measurement that decides comfort is the gap between the seat and the underside of the worktop: 25–30 cm. Less than 25 cm and your thighs are trapped; more than 30 cm and you perch rather than sit.

Seat height by worktop height
| Worktop / table height | Seat height | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| 75 cm | 42–45 cm | Standard dining table — a normal dining chair, not a stool |
| 90 cm | 60–65 cm | Kitchen counter, breakfast bar |
| 95–100 cm | 65–70 cm | Raised island with a thicker top |
| 105–110 cm | 75–80 cm | Bar height, pub table, tall island |
Measure from the floor to the underside of the worktop, not to the top surface, and not to the counter's overhang. If your counter is 90 cm to the top and the top is 4 cm thick, the usable figure for the gap is 86 cm — a 60 cm seat leaves 26 cm, which is right in the sweet spot.
Footrest: the detail that decides whether you stay
A stool without a footrest is a stool you leave after ten minutes. Feet need support roughly 40–45 cm below the seat so the knees sit at about 90° with the thighs supported.
- 65 cm seat → footrest at 20–25 cm from the floor.
- 75 cm seat → footrest at 30–35 cm from the floor.
- Backless stools need the footrest more, not less: there is nothing else holding you in place.
Island overhang: how much knee room
| Overhang depth | What it supports |
|---|---|
| 20–25 cm | Backless stool used for coffee and short sits; knees stay under the counter edge |
| 30 cm | Minimum for a stool with a back; knees clear the cabinet run |
| 40–45 cm | Full seat tuck-under; the stool disappears when not in use |
Under 20 cm of overhang, your knees hit the cabinet doors and the stool is pushed out into the walkway. In a narrow kitchen that is a trip hazard every morning.
How many stools fit
Allow 60–65 cm centre to centre per stool, or 55 cm for backless stools at a pinch. A 180 cm island takes three stools at 60 cm spacing; two stools look lost and four do not fit.
Leave 15–20 cm at each end of the run so the outer stools are not jammed against a wall or a return. Stool width matters too: a 45 cm wide stool at 60 cm centres leaves only 15 cm between seats, which is fine for backless but crowded with arms.
Stability, weight and floor protection
Tall stools tip more easily than chairs because the centre of gravity is higher. Look for a base or legs that splay at least 5 cm wider than the seat, and a weight rating of 120 kg or more for adult use. On tile or wood floors, add felt pads: metal stool legs concentrate the load on four small points and mark a floor within weeks.
For households with young children, choose backless stools that tuck fully under a 40 cm overhang rather than tall stools with backs that sit in the walkway.
