Short answer: cushions creep because the foam and the deck are both smooth and slightly undersized. Put a 2 mm rubberised grip liner under each seat cushion, cut about 5 cm smaller than the cushion so it never peeks out, then add four 5 cm hook-and-loop strips along the front corners. That combination kills roughly 90% of the sliding. Flip and rotate the cushions every month and most sofas stay put for years.

Every sofa owner knows the ritual: you sit down, the seat cushion has migrated 8 cm forward, and the back cushion has folded itself into a taco. It is not a defect. It is friction, gravity and a few millimetres of foam compression doing their thing, five times a day, for a decade.
Why cushions wander in the first place
Three things cause it, and knowing which one you have saves you from buying the wrong fix.
- Seat depth. Cushions deeper than 65 cm have more foam to compress, so the front edge creeps forward faster. Deep "cloud" seats look great and slide the most.
- Low-friction upholstery. Polyester and microfibre weaves have a coefficient of friction of roughly 0.2 against a woven deck — slicker than a buttered baking tray. Linen and bouclé sit closer to 0.4 and misbehave far less.
- Foam fatigue. A 35 kg/m³ foam cushion loses about 8–10% of its height in the first 18 months. Once it compresses unevenly, it wedges itself forward and stays there.
The five fixes, ranked by how long they last
| Fix | Cost | Effort | Realistic lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rubberised grip liner (2 mm) | $10–20 | 5 min | 2–3 years |
| Hook-and-loop strips (5 cm wide) | $8–15 | 20 min + stapler | 4–6 years |
| One-piece seat cover or tuck-in wrap | $25–60 | 10 min | As long as the cover |
| Anti-slip underlay under the whole sofa | $15 | 2 min | 1–2 years |
| New high-resilience foam (35 kg/m³) | $60–120 per cushion | Half a day | 8–10 years |
Fix 1: the grip liner, done properly
Buy a roll of PVC or rubberised shelf liner, the kind with a waffle texture, not the thin foam stuff that crumbles in a year. Cut each piece 5 cm smaller than the cushion on every side. If the liner is visible when you sit down, it is too big and it will roll up at the edges — the single most common reason this fix "doesn't work".
One roll of 30 × 150 cm covers a three-seater. Cost per seat: about $4.
Fix 2: hook-and-loop, the permanent version
Staple the hook side to the deck, the loop side to the cushion's underside, 5 cm wide and 15 cm long, positioned 10 cm in from each front corner. Four strips per cushion is plenty on a 60 cm deep seat; six if the seat is 70 cm or deeper. Use 8 mm staples and keep them 3 cm away from the cushion edge so the foam does not tear through.
This is the fix upholsterers use on hotel sofas. It survives daily use for four to six years, and it is invisible.
Fix 3: the 60-second tuck
If your cushions have a removable cover, tuck 10 cm of fabric under the cushion before you zip. The extra tension pulls the cushion backward, not forward. It is free, it takes a minute, and it works surprisingly well on IKEA-style slipcovers. Combine it with the liner and you can forget about the problem entirely.
Fix 4: check the deck, not just the cushion
Some sofas slide because the platform underneath is sagging. Press down in the middle of the deck: if it gives more than 2 cm before you feel the frame, the webbing or the particle board has failed, and no liner will save you. That is a repair job, not a styling job.
Fix 5: replace the foam, keep the cover
When the cushions are more pancake than cushion, order replacement foam at 35 kg/m³ density, high resilience, cut to your exact measurements plus 1 cm of wrap. A decent foam shop will cut and bag it for $60–120 per seat. You keep the cover and the sofa, and you get another eight to ten years.
The monthly habit that doubles cushion life
Flip and swap the cushions on the first of every month. Rotating left-to-right and front-to-back spreads the load, so the foam compresses evenly instead of forming one permanent dent where you always sit. Ten seconds a month, and your sofa looks two years younger at the five-year mark.
